Sunday, February 14th, 2016- The First Sunday in Lent, Luke 4:1-13

Every Sunday is a celebration of our Lord's resurrection.  For that reason, Sundays are not counted among the 40 days of Lent.  Today, the World Hunger devotion simply has us read the gospel lesson for the first Sunday in Lent, Luke 4:1-13.

In my Sunday sermon, I decided to focus on identity, specifically because Satan seeks to get Jesus to question his identity, and replace it with a new one.  "If you are the Son of God..."  But Jesus holds fast to the identity given him, the Son of God, and resists each of the three temptations that would have traded in his true identity, for a false one.

Who are we?  It's a question we struggle with all our lives.  Who we are, or how we understand ourselves, changes with our changing circumstances.  I've been a high school student, a newlywed, a father, a pastor, a Minnesotan, a Utahn, a sinner, and a saint, to name a few.  But the identity that matters, and never changes, is that I'm a baptized and beloved child of God.  To that truth I cling, no matter how circumstances change.
